experiment #3 flood

Question: what happens when the force of water is increased?

Hypothesis: Since the whole from this cup is bigger, I think the water will create more pathways in the sand. I also think that the water will go down quicker than the last experiment.

materials: bucket, ruler, sand, cup with small whole, tray, thingy that holds tray to make it stable

observation:

first 10 seconds, the sand creates a huge path for the water to go through, then 50 seconds the sand creates a ramp-shaped stream 1 minute 20 sec forms the mini waterfall.more water managed to escape. This experiment was much different the experiment #2. The cup with the larger whole really made a big effect on this experiment. We noticed that the whole was the one thing that made the whole experiment 100% different than the last one we had done. Since the whole was bigger, the water came down quicker which led to the water coming into the sand quicker which changed the WHOLE thing. We were very surprised.

procedure:
  1. put sand and clay on the tray
  2. make sure it is 20 cm long on one side
  3. put on edge of the table
  4. put ruler and cup with a big hole on top of the tray
  5. pour 4 cups of water
  6. watch & learn

conclusion: This experiment was very fun. I learned a lot from it, (especially the big whole fiesta) We learnt that even the smallest things in objects, could make the biggest effect on a big thing.
